Although he did not yet know it, Wilhelm Eugen Weber was embarking on an adventure that would change his life, one he would not have undertaken of his own accord. It began the morning his photographic image was exhibited, larger than life, on a screen in the projection room of East German Intelligence Headquarters in Lichtenberg, a borough of East Berlin.
For some weeks prior to this, details of his past, his private life, his habits and his hobbies had been culled, like so many specimens, then set aside for future appraisal by experts who could estimate their worth and bartering value.
The results of the intensive investigation had been favorable. Wilhelm Weber was a potential source of information that would be of considerable interest to the government of the German Democratic Republic. All that was needed now was his cooperation. A psychological evaluation of the man’s character that made up Section Three of a twenty page dossier indicated that he could be persuaded, coerced if necessary, to cooperate.
Thus began the strange odyssey of Wilhelm Eugen Weber, ordinary citizen.
