Red in the Flower Bed: An Illustrated Children’s Story About Interracial Adoption by Andrea Nepa

Children’s fiction by an author who is an adoptive parent.

Excerpt

One day, a seed dropped

From a poppy flower

Onto the earth below.

But it was too dry,

And the poppy began to cry:

“Good-bye little one.

You will be missed you know,

but this is no place for you to grow.”

So she let the wind carry the seed

From east to west

Until they found a place

That was best.

Summer had started,

So the seed departed.

Through the heat of the day

She made her way.

Slowly leaves turned orange, red and yellow.

The air began to mellow;

Then snow started to fall.

One day birds began to call.

Green was starting to show

As grass began to grow.

One night they came upon a garden site.

“Here,” said the wind,

“I have found on this ground a lovely patch

that I think will match.”

“What a tiny seed. It’s just what we need,”

chimed the garden flowers.
