The special vocab of an expert crosswod solver available for all.
Excerpt
A degree in linguistics is not a prerequisite for competent crossword solving. Nor do you have to be a word nerd. To get to square one, you need a sense of humor and a writing implement. To these add a passing knowledge of the dialect that puzzle people call Crosswordese, the special vocabulary that makes crossword tick. I shared these words in the curriculum of an adult ed course I devised for the New School for Social Research, in New York’s Greenwich Village. Like solitaire, puzzle solving is a solo pastime. You can do it your way, or you can try my suggested strategy. Like the practice of yoga, there is no right or wrong way to do puzzles. What I offer is a series of steps that, in my experience, has proven to work like a charm.
