Verifiable Evidence by Paidra Delayno

It started in Oregon with a plea for help from an attractive woman. Was she just somebody in need of a private Investigator? Or was she the first link in the chain of events leading Jack Cole to the Oval Office?

Excerpt

AS JACOBSON PREPARED TO LEAVE his office for the day, the telephone started ringing. He answered it and was surprised to hear from Captain Carol Dye.

“Colonel, this is Dye. I have some good news.”

“I could use some.”

“I was at the Boardwalk, investigating of course, and guess who I ran into?”

“You know I can’t stand guessing games.”

“The guy in the picture.”

“You mean the guy from Phoenix?”

“Yes, sir. In the flesh. He says his name’s Jack Cole. He claims to be a PI out of Portland, Oregon.”

“Jack Cole, huh? That’s him all right. I knew the face was familiar but I couldn’t place him. I had no idea he was anywhere around here.”

“You know him, Sir?”

“I never had the pleasure of meeting him but everybody who’s been in the business for any time at all knows Jack Cole, if only by name. He’s one of the standards. He tell you anything?”

“Nothing at all”

“That doesn’t surprise me. Be careful with him, Carol. He might not be a kid anymore but he’s most likely just as dangerous. We don’t know what his interest in this game is.”
