The sun had settled behind the low hills. The birds, who had been merrily singing all day, were asleep in their birdhouses and treetop nests.

The crickets scritchscritched secret (though very noisy) messages through the moonless dark.

Fireflies flashed, “Good evening!” to one another over the distance.
